Every utility executive I talk to wants AI in their field operations. Predictive maintenance, intelligent scheduling, automated dispatching — the use cases are clear and the potential ROI is enormous. But when I ask a simple follow-up question — "Is your organization ready?" — the room usually goes quiet.
AI readiness isn't about having the latest technology stack. It's about whether your people, processes, and data are positioned to actually benefit from machine intelligence. After working with dozens of Oracle Field Service clients across the utility and energy sector, I've built a framework for assessing exactly that.
The Readiness Gap
There's a growing divide in the utility industry. On one side, you have organizations that are deploying AI into production workflows and seeing real results — reduced truck rolls, faster first-time fixes, lower operational costs. On the other, you have companies that have been running AI "pilots" for two years with nothing to show for it.
The difference between these two groups has almost nothing to do with their technology budgets. It comes down to readiness across four dimensions.
The Four Pillars of AI Readiness
Data Maturity
Are your work orders, asset records, and technician profiles clean, connected, and consistently maintained? AI learns from your history — if that history is fragmented or unreliable, the models will be too.
Process Standardization
Do your field operations follow consistent, documented workflows? Or does every region, every crew, every dispatcher have their own way of doing things? AI can optimize a process — it can't optimize chaos.
Technology Foundation
Is your field service platform cloud-native with open APIs? Can it ingest real-time data and surface AI recommendations within existing workflows? Legacy, on-premise systems create integration barriers that stall AI adoption.
Organizational Appetite
Does your leadership team understand that AI is a journey, not a project? Is there a sponsor who can champion change management, fund iteration, and protect the initiative when early results are messy?
Assessing Where You Stand
For each pillar, I use a simple maturity scale:
- Level 1 — Reactive: No standardization, fragmented data, manual processes, no executive sponsorship for AI.
- Level 2 — Structured: Basic data governance in place, some process standardization, cloud migration underway, leadership awareness.
- Level 3 — Optimized: Clean connected data, consistent workflows across regions, cloud-native platform with integration capabilities, dedicated AI sponsor.
- Level 4 — Intelligent: AI actively deployed in production, continuous model improvement, organization treats data as a strategic asset, AI team embedded in operations.
Most organizations I assess land between Level 1 and Level 2. That's not a failure — it's a starting point. The critical mistake is trying to jump to Level 4 without doing the work at Levels 2 and 3.
The Data Maturity Bottleneck
Of the four pillars, data maturity is consistently the biggest bottleneck. And it's not because organizations don't have data — they have too much of it, spread across too many systems, with too many inconsistencies.
A typical utility might have work order history in Oracle Field Service, asset data in a GIS system, customer records in a CRM, and financial data in an ERP. Each system has its own data model, its own naming conventions, and its own version of the truth. Before any AI model can learn from this data, someone has to connect it, clean it, and establish a single source of truth.
I tell every client the same thing: if you're not willing to invest in data quality, you're not ready for AI. Full stop. No model, no matter how sophisticated, can compensate for bad data.
The Change Management Dimension
Even with perfect data and a world-class technology stack, AI projects fail when the people who use them don't trust them. A veteran dispatcher who has been manually routing technicians for 15 years isn't going to hand over control to an algorithm based on a PowerPoint presentation.
The organizations that get this right follow a pattern:
- Start with augmentation, not automation. Let the AI make suggestions that the dispatcher can accept or override. Track the outcomes. Over time, as the human sees the AI consistently making good recommendations, trust builds naturally.
- Make it transparent. Show why the AI made a recommendation. "This technician was selected because they have the required certification, are 12 minutes closer, and have a 94% first-time fix rate for this work order type." Explainability builds confidence.
- Celebrate early wins publicly. When the AI saves a truck roll, prevents a missed SLA, or catches a scheduling conflict, make sure the team knows about it. Success stories are the most effective change management tool.
A Practical Roadmap
If your organization is at Level 1 or 2, here's how to move toward AI readiness without trying to boil the ocean:
Months 1–3: Foundation
Audit your data landscape. Map where field service data lives, identify gaps and inconsistencies, and establish data ownership. Begin standardizing work order categories and asset classifications. This isn't glamorous work, but it's the foundation everything else builds on.
Months 4–6: Connection
Integrate your core systems — Field Service, ERP, asset management — into a connected data layer. If you're on Oracle, this is where OCI and integration cloud services become critical. The goal: a single, reliable view of your field operations data.
Months 7–9: First Use Case
Pick one high-impact, well-defined AI use case — intelligent work order triage is a great starting point. Build it on production data, in the production environment, with production users. Measure results in operational terms, not model accuracy.
Months 10–12: Scale and Iterate
Based on what you learn, refine the model, expand to additional use cases, and begin building the internal capability to maintain and improve AI systems independently. This is where the organizational muscle develops.
The Bottom Line
AI readiness is not a binary state — it's a spectrum. And the good news is that the work you do to become AI-ready (cleaning data, standardizing processes, modernizing your technology stack) delivers value long before any AI model goes live. These are investments in operational excellence that pay dividends regardless of what AI capabilities you eventually deploy.
The question isn't "Are we ready for AI?" It's "Are we willing to do the foundational work that makes AI possible?" If the answer is yes, you're already ahead of most of your peers.
